Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
