No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Event
At least 6 people have died amid a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The midweek "devastating" event seems to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
Twenty-two others were hurt, among them 5 who remain in critical condition.
A large crowd had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, the capital, with the aspiration of enlisting in the armed forces.
The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of about 32%, the most recent government statistics show, and such recruitment events typically attract large crowds and frequently result in chaotic scenes.
The deadline to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to accommodate more applicants, as a number had experienced challenges in the application procedure.
Army spokesperson Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush took place before the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the wounded in medical care.
Order has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has now begun.
