The medal will honor to pay tribute to the esteemed British primatologist who died this year. It is designed to celebrate individuals and groups that advocate for the natural world.

Initial honorees will be revealed during the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd next year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The idea behind this medal, and the festival being tasked with organising it, originated with Jane,” a statement said. “She expressed she would like this to happen. And I think due to the close bond she shared with the festival.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize sustainable programmes undertaken to make our world a better place for all living beings and ecosystems and offer support to continue that work,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus noted that the medal – unveiled at a scientific institution – will likely encompass various fields.

“The intent is for it to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking award honoring scientific outreach that we created exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that very medal.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, a prominent voice stated, “Honestly, it is difficult to maintain optimism. Present governance globally represents a war on science. So this undermines collective action.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection shared optimism that “given direction and when empowered, humans are capable of being responsible caretakers of our planet”, pointing to the programs of a foundation that, among its other activities, empowers the next generation get involved locally, animals, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother repeatedly reminded us, our daily actions make a difference and it is up to us the kind of difference we make,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and this medal will offer support and increase understanding regarding the positive actions currently in progress.”
